The Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) in collaboration with the Department of Animal Resources (DAR) has created the Animal Research Biosafety Program to ensure that laboratory animals are handled safely and that risks associated with biological, chemical, and radiological hazards are minimized.
Animal Research Biosafety Manual (ARBSM)
The primary objectives of this manual are to provide techniques for identifying hazards related to the:
- Care, use, and handling of laboratory animals
- Assessing the risk(s) associated with those hazards
- Eliminating or controlling those risks
Animal Exposure Process
- Complete the Animal Exposure Risk Assessment (HIPAA compliant)
- Opt-in and have a health evaluation; OR, choose to opt-out of the program. You may opt-in at any time. Those who are identified with animal exposure must choose one or the other at the time they are notified.

Safety Committees
Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
- IACUC oversees USC’s animal programs, animal facilities, and policies ensuring appropriate care, ethical use and humane treatment of animals.
Department of Animal Resources (DAR)
- DAR provides animal procurement, daily animal care, animal health care, and scientific support for USC programs using animals in research and teaching.
Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)
- The IBC is responsible for reviewing projects in which biohazards are used, ensuring that research is conducted safely, and assessing and minimizing risks.
