MEMORANDUM
Date:Monday, January 13, 2020
To:Principal Investigators and Permit Holders
From:Deona Willes, MPH, CLS, Executive Director
USC Office of Environmental Health and Safety
Subject:Annual Laboratory Safety Training Refresher Reminder

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges to the University, its surrounding community, and world. Nonetheless, the Trojan spirit continues to thrive, particularly in the research community, where new challenges are met with innovative solutions. Let us enter 2021 with a renewed commitment to safety by completing the annual safety refresher training for all you staff.

To satisfy the annual training requirement:

  1. Review the Annual Safety Refresher Topics Checklist for topics in your area with your staff
  2. Check off the safety topics that you discuss with your group
  3. Document attendance on the Site-Specific Training Record (SSTR) and
  4. Submit the SSTR to EH&S via email labsafety@usc.edu.

Please complete within 60 days of this notice.

EH&S continues to provide instructor-led safety training courses via Zoom and is constantly seeking to expand e-Learning course offerings via Trojan Learn to provide efficient and effective safety courses.

The new Online Bloodborne Pathogens and Aerosol Transmitted Disease training is available now via Trojan Learn and provides customized learning scenarios based on the learner’s job. Additionally, an online version of General Laboratory Safety will be forthcoming soon. Furthermore, EH&S has created several how-to videos, available on the USC EH&S Youtube Channel, to highlight important safety principles regarding high-demand Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) items. These videos are also included in USC’s Health, Hygiene, and Safety training. A full list of trainings with instructions on how to attend can be found on the EH&S Training Catalog webpage.

Finally, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, EH&S has put together a COVID-19 Resource Center webpage to help members of the USC community better protect themselves in their work and living environments.

Thank you again for your continuing efforts to protect the health and safety of the campus community. We look forward to a prosperous and safe 2021 at USC.

Sincerely,

Deona Willes, MPH, CLS Executive Director, USC EH&S
