Usage of malodorous chemicals in chemical experimentation and their uncontrolled release into the atmosphere (including via fume hood exhaust) may result in natural gas leak notifications to DPS – this would prompt an investigation/emergency response by LAFD and SoCalGas and/or widespread nuisance complaints.

Labs using highly odorous chemicals (e.g., thiols, organic selenides and diselenides, and tetrahydrothiophene) are REQUIRED to follow the notification procedure given below before starting work. It is highly recommended that labs also:

  • Develop a standard operating procedure (SOP) to control odor release for each odoriferous chemical.
  • Ensure that new lab personnel are trained on work practices and notification procedures.

Consult with EH&S if advice is needed on handling odorous materials.

Instructions

Prior to use of odorous chemicals:

  1. Notify DPS at 213.740.6000 during normal business hours 8 AM to 5 PM even if the work is outside business hours. Provide the following information:
    • Location – lab building and lab room number
    • School/department
    • Date/time period work will take place
    • Chemical being used
    • Person using the chemical
    • Contact phone number
    • PI name or research group
  2. Following notification to DPS, complete and submit the Malodorous Chemical Usage Notification form below during normal business hours 8 AM to 5 PM to notify Lab Safety, HazMat, Injury Prevention, and USC Fire Safety.
